Copyright vs. Copywrong

Blog, General, resources No Comments »

This was one of the more popular posts I wrote, so I guess it’s fitting that I begin here on the re-birth.

The issue of Copyright and Fair Use is a big one. It’s very important that we, as educators, set a good example for students by using 100% legal media in our projects. This is especially true of work that may get posted on the Web or submitted for contests. The following are some of the sites with copyright-friendly, royalty-free images. As always, if you use the media in any work, you should cite your sources.
Information
Images
  • Pics4Learning has a large selection of images that have been donated by students, teachers, and amateur photographers. Has easy bibliography information.
  • Kitzu is an OCDE sponsored site with kits of images by subject and grade level.
  • FreeDigitalPhotos.net is a site with lots of high-quality, royalty-free images. Free for educational use.
  • American Memory at the Library of Congress is a repository with lots of free, public domain images and resources organized by topics.
  • Calisphere is a world of primary resources that are focused on California History.
  • National Park Service library of images.
  • Free Public Domain Photo Database is full of images that are free and in the public domain. There are a few images subject to copyright, but they are clearly marked.
  • NASA Multimedia Page is a gallery of free multimedia from NASA’s vast archives.
  • USGS Image Gallery contains maps and images from the US Geological Service.
  • Wikimedia Commons is the image library of Wikipedia. Practically everything in Wikipedia is in the public domain so free for educational use.
  • openphoto is a site that is full of high-quality images from amateur photographers. Each image states the license. Most are attribution licenses, so you must attribute them to the artist.
  • FreePhotosBank has free stock images. They do state that you must cite the source.
  • U.S. Government Photos and Images is a repository of links to multimedia sites from many branches of the U.S. Government. Some links are not working. The majority of the images on each site are free, but double check the copyright.
  • everystockphoto.com is one of the best image search sites. They focus on royalty-free images and search from Flickr, Morgue Files, stock.xchng and a few others. They always give a link to the artist for citation purposes.
  • streaming.discoveryeducation.com is where our district pays for accounts for teachers to gather video clips, music and images.
Audio
  • Kunst der Fuge free classical MIDI files. Download limits of 5 per day.
  • mfiles is another site with free classical MIDI files. It’s not as good as Kunst der Fuge, but it has simpler files.
  • Incompetech by Kevin MacLeod is a site with pre-done quality music. It’s totally free to use if you cite the artist. He’d like a $5 donation, but is fine if you just credit the work to him. Many genres and styles on the Royalty-Free Music page.

Like a Phoenix

Ted AvatarSo… somewhere along the way, my blog/podcast here got really corrupted. Not sure why, but I have a hunch. I believe that I had not been paying attention to it very well… so it revolted. I have lost everything, so now I begin again… like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Welcome back to reading my blog. I really don’t know what happened, but I’ll try to be better about posting so that the site doesn’t quit on me again.
